Volunteers of America: Alexandria's House

Who We Are

Alex's House needs support from student volunteers willing to babysit children while mothers attend evening meetings and/or lessons, to provide tutoring to mothers in school and to model safe health and wellness choices (cooking lessons, shared exercise, book groups, etc.) We always look for volunteers to spend time with our young mothers, listening and building relationships.

What We Do

Alexandria's House is a transitional living facility for pregnant and parenting teenagers (ages 16-20) and their babies. The home, established in 1990, has six furnished bedrooms, five and a half bathrooms as well as shared kitchen, living and laundry facilities. At Alexandria's House, moms and babies live in a safe, supportive and nurturing home for up to 24 months or until the mother's twentieth birthday. During this time, babies get a healthy start with pre-natal and well-baby care while young mothers learn independent living and parenting skills. Alexandria's House offers comprehensive case management and 24-hour staff supervision and is licensed by the state of Washington to serve pregnant and parenting teenagers who are: homeless or in transition to living independently; low-income and seeking stability and progression in school, employment or treatment services; and are unable to live with family. While living at Alexandria's House, resident mothers attend school and/or work, set and work toward individual goals with a case manager, meet with public health nurses, participate in the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program, contribute to their room and board expenses, provide proper supervision and care for their babies, and contribute to shared cooking and cleaning responsibilities.
