Meals on Wheels GSC

Mission: The mission of Meals on Wheels Greater Spokane County is to fight hunger and social isolation among seniors. Vision: The goal of Meals on Wheels Greater Spokane County is for no senior to go hungry and to remain living independently in their own home. This will be done by providing high-quality nutritious meals via home delivery or at our Silver Café community meal sites, collaborating with other community agencies, advocating for seniors, and educating the public about senior hunger and isolation. History: Meals on Wheels Greater Spokane County was started in 1971 by a teenager from Spokane Valley. He saw a need for his grandmother to receive help preparing her meals. He went to his youth group at Spokane Valley United Methodist Church for help and they, along with their leader, pursued the idea of a Valley Meals on Wheels program. They began meal delivery in early 1972 with the support of church members. The youth delivered on holidays and during school lunch breaks, and when they were unavailable church members filled in. In 1979 Spokane Valley Meals on Wheels Articles of Incorporation were signed and they went on to serve over 7,800 meals that year. Over 50 years later Meals on Wheels Greater Spokane County is serving over 236,000 meals per year.

Meals on Wheels Greater Spokane County serves 19,695 meals every month across the 1,800 square miles of Spokane County, through both home deliveries and Silver Cafes. This means our kitchen prepares over 900 meals daily for seniors over 60 who are unable to access nutritious food due to various reasons.
