Volunteer: Transitions: Women's HearthWomen’s Hearth: The Women's Hearth is a safe, welcoming community that promotes growth and well-being in body, mind, and spirit for women of diverse backgrounds. The Hearth fosters nurturing relationships, encourages self-determination, and advocates for change in systems that oppress women. The Hearth provides free services that promote growth and healing including: over 70 groups and classes per month, access to resources and referrals for various social services, a technology center with free access to internet and computers, and access to basic needs such as showers, food, and hygiene products. Must identify as a woman to serve here. Volunteer Roles: (Commitment of 30 volunteer hours is required; does not have to be completed in one term.) Arts & Crafts Group Leader: This volunteer will lead a weekly group and offer instruction on simple art projects. No expertise needed, just enthusiasm for making art and working with people. All materials are provided onsite. Hygiene & Health Group Leader: This volunteer will lead a weekly or biweekly group on topics relating to health and hygiene. This may include: instructions on basic hygiene, hygiene-related diseases, sexual health, preventative care, and related wellness topics. This would be a great opportunity for a volunteer with a background or career interest in nursing, physical education, nutritional science, or social work. Sewing Circle Group Leader: This volunteer will lead a weekly sewing circle. We encourage the group leader to offer some instruction as needed, or try creative sewing projects, but the circle can also be an opportunity for curious beginners to try sewing for the first time. All materials are provided onsite. Knit & Crochet Group Leader: This volunteer will lead our weekly knit and crochet group, which is typically held on Fridays, but can be changed to accommodate a group leader’s schedule. Historically, this group has been a mixture of beginners who need instruction on either knitting or crocheting, and experienced knitters and crocheters who simply enjoy the company. All materials are provided onsite. Cooking Class Group Leader: This volunteer will lead a weekly or biweekly cooking class. The curriculum and instructions for the class have already been created and will be easy for a new group leader to follow. A volunteer will simply need to bring recipe ideas and an enthusiasm for cooking. A food handlers permit is encouraged but not required, as staff onsite already have food handlers permits and will assist. All materials are provided onsite, and we encourage volunteers to utilize our food pantry and get creative with ingredients! Program Assistant Internship: In this new volunteer position, program assistants will provide support to staff and participants at the front desk of Women’s Hearth. Tasks will include checking in participants, answering phones, communicating with participants, and assisting as needed during daily operations or special events. Volunteers will always be partnered with a staff member on the floor, and the Volunteer & Activities Coordinator will provide training and supervision during this internship. This is a great resume-building opportunity for anyone discerning a career in social work to learn about shelter operations, connect with our unhoused neighbors, and gain valuable direct service experience. The minimum time commitment is 4 hours per week, though students completing the internship for credit will base their hours around course requirements. We are flexible with scheduling but do ask for consistency and follow-through from all interns. Event Volunteering: We host one to three community events a month at TLC. Past events have consisted of BBQs, movie nights, arts and crafts, holiday celebrations. Clean Up Day: Volunteers can stop by any time between 10:00 AM and 4:00 pm and stay for any amount of time they choose. Some of these tasks will require using stairs, maneuvering corners, and lifting up to 50 pounds. Childcare: Provide childcare during Participant Advisory Committee (PAC) meetings, a participant voice and empowerment program. PAC members are Transitions participants and alums who use their voices and experiences to advise on issues affecting participants in Transitions’ programs, as well as identifying gaps in services and opportunities for improvement. PAC meetings are the last Wednesday of the month, with childcare needed from 12:15 - 2:15. Apartment Turn-Around: Help clean and ready vacated apartments so they are quickly available for new families who are waiting to move into TLC. Times vary depending on vacancies but let us know if you'd like to be added to a contact list when the need arises. Volunteer: Foster CaregiversWe depend on the kindness, love and homes of our foster parents to help us save hundreds of lives every year. Members of our foster care program open up their homes for shelter animals. They care for kittens or puppies until they are old enough for adoption, animals with illnesses and injuries until they are healed, and animals who need socialization or those who are not thriving in the shelter environment. The time commitment varies upon the needs of the foster pet, but generally is between 2 weeks and 3 months.
Fostering is a flexible, fun and rewarding volunteer experience, and requires a special person- able to invest themselves into the lives of foster pets, and let them go knowing they’ve helped save a life. We provide all supplies foster parents need, from food and bedding to medication. While it is best to have some knowledge about animal behavior and health, we always try to match foster parents with animals whose needs are within your ability level, and we provide ongoing help and support throughout your foster experience.
If you have your own animals, you’ll want to consider how they will adjust to having a foster pet. Some animals do very well with a temporary friend and can help socialize the foster animal. Other pets have a harder time with new animals being added to or leaving the family. You’re the best judge of your pet’s personality. For the safety of your pets and the foster animal, it’s important to keep your pets up-to-date on vaccinations. In many cases, the foster pet will need to be isolated from your own pets, either temporarily or throughout the foster period.

Along with the orientation into our program, volunteers will undergo a background check through DSHS. Those are completed and paid for by The Arc of Spokane. There aren't any requirements on how many hours volunteers put in and days to come in are very flexible to individual schedules. We invite anyone interested in coming into our centers to join our team. Whether it's just for a special event, on occasional breaks or having a regular schedule. We will work with you and find a good fit for your skills and talents. Agency: The Arc of Spokane Need Type: Volunteer Date: Is Ongoing Zip Code: 99217 Allow Groups: No |

Volunteer: Girl Scout Go-Getters Outreach ProgramGirl Scouts offers every girl a chance to practice a lifetime of leadership, adventure, and success. With our Go Getter outreach program we have been successful in engaging girls from low income neighborhoods into the Girl Scout program. We offer the Girl Scout experience to girls in Title 1 schools, low income rural communities, and community centers. With financial hardship hitting many of the families this past two years we grew our Go Getters program, and are positioned to offer even more girls the opportunity to participate in Girl Scouts with no expense out of pocket. The demand for this program is higher than ever, and our goal as a council is to have 10% of our girl members as part of the Go Getter program. As a Go Getter they will build friendships with other girls and belong regardless of their socio economic status. We teach girls how to make decisions and work as a team, build confidence in themselves, provide hands on work with STEM, spend time outdoors, and learn about entrepreneurship through cookie sales. Our studies show that this whole child approach works. Alums report higher academic attainment and income, greater community service and civic engagement, and a stronger sense of self. We want to reach girls in high poverty areas and give them access to Girl Scouts. Poverty is one of the most widely used indicators of child well-being and has wide ranging negative effects on children’s health, educational achievement, and safety. Traditionally, Girl Scout troops rely heavily on parental support and volunteering. In many high-poverty communities there is a lack of support and the financial burden on families are cited obstacles to participation, which Go Getters overcomes Agency: Girl Scouts Eastern Washington Northern Idaho Girl Scouts offers every girl a chance to practice a lifetime of leadership, adventure, and success. Volunteer: Work with Christ KitchenVolunteers come Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays, typically for about one to two hours at a time, between the hours of 10:00 am to 3:00 pm. There is some flexibility depending on the individual's schedule, but all volunteers who come to serve schedule their time with me, so that I am aware and prepared, and hopefully escape any major conflicts due to the fact that our working space is very limited.
We do have volunteers come on Thursdays for our Bible Study and production, starting at 9am and going until 12p. Bible study starts at 9a and then production is from 10a-12p. Production is where our dry ingredient packages are put together, whether it is stickering labels, hole-punching, or threading fabric and bowing. We also have various jobs such as preparing our lunch boxes for catering events, folding brochures, etc. At noon, we are provided lunch and have prayer time together. Thursdays are a great day to serve, because you get to experience the ministry at work in its entirety, and interact with the women we serve! If this is something you would like to be a part of, let me know and I will put you on the schedule.
Feel free to reach out via phone call or email with any questions or if you'd like to get something set up!
